I’m always nervous around the 31st of December. Might come as a surprise, but my nervousness has absolutely nothing to do with my outfit for my NYE celebrations. It’s just the anxiety of a new beginning, of a crisp, untouched page of a brand new book.
I have a tiny little secret ritual that I’ve been doing since a few (almost 5) years now and I find it being the only thing to calm my anxious nerves on the last day of an eventful year. I started it with my best friend years ago. We make it a point to meet even if it’s for a couple of minutes on this day and do this ritual together. What started as a silly ritual has turned into something immensely meaningful, impactful and literally, year-changing, without us even realising it. I’ve seen the MAJOR success of it and hence this year, I wanted to share it with you guys.
Years ago we named it the ‘Wish Jar’.
Let’s begin with the ingredients. All you need is a jar, preferably an air tight one or a box with a lid, chits of paper, a pen and peaceful corner in your home.
Now here’s what we did. On each individual chit of paper, we wrote down what we ‘wished’ for in the coming year. Right from magnanimous life-changing situations (admission into a university, health goals, marriage, finding love, etc), to insignificant demands (materialistic pleasures), to emotions we wished to feel (travel, freedom, stress-free etc). One year it was 10 chits and another year it was 16. It didn’t matter how many there were, as long as we were sure that we really wanted this ‘thing’. Now, we would put it all into this little jar, keep the jar in a little corner or hide it somewhere no-one would find it and literally forget about it for the rest of the year.
The magic of this ritual was, we were taking out the time to really introspect and ask ourselves – WHAT DO WE REALLY WANT OUT OF LIFE; WHAT REALLY MATTERS? When we had our answers, writing them down was like striving to turn our thoughts into reality and sending a clear message to the universe of what these thoughts (soon to become reality) were. The most special bit was completely forgetting about this jar the next day, including everything I had written inside, and opening it directly on the 31st December next year. Every year it was the same story, 80% of the stuff I had written came true/happened in that one year. But more importantly, it was crazy that I had not thought about/fretted over 80% of these things the entire year!!!
Even if I cut out all the deep stuff, I enjoyed the time I got with myself to just introspect and evaluate my dreams, my goals. That glimmer of hope with every little chit, truly kept the fire burning within me.
Maybe it’s the magic of not obsessing over our dreams & goals but instead working hard towards them in our own little way and in the process, being able to BELIEVE that they will materialise some day. Doing this little ritual is my way of putting my BELIEF out there.
I’m excited to do mine this year, 2017 has been brilliant and eventful for me to say the least! If you’re going to do it (and I insist you do) – I would love to know – please tell me in the comments below!!!
